Dear 5.5,
This 3rd posting is going to be about Total Defence which we celebrated on 15th Feb (Friday). It commemorates the day of the fall of Singapore into the hands of the Japanese and marks the beginning of the Japanese Occupation, lasting a full 3 years and 8 months.
As you all know, we will be going down to Bt Chandu for our learning journey and we will also visit the Old Ford Factory. To make sure that all of you benefit from the trip, you need to read up the link that I have provided titled "Defence of Malaya" beforehand. This will give you a greater understanding of the dark years of Singapore during the Japanese Occupation.
Read up on the British Defence plans to understand what the British had in mind to deal with the Japanese and on the other hand, also read about the Japanese assault
plans.
After reading, think about the following questions and blog your opinions and comments as Journal 3 - part 1.
- What do you think about the British plans and war strategies? Effective? Or not so?? How so? Give some reasons to support your opinions.
- Although we know that the Japanese won the war,do you think the Japanese plans were really good? Or were they just lucky??
- What could have caused for the fall of Singapore to the Japanese?? Was it that we did not put up a good fight?? Or lack of equipment? Skill? Strategy?
Spend ample time thinking through... I'll be looking for pupils' who are able to give me insightful opinions on the war strategies used by the British and Japanese.
It should take you quite a while before you can complete this posting.
Good comments take time to be expressed well so do not rush through your journal postings.
